History

In April of 2002, a group of individuals came together with a vision of supporting area youth. Specifically this group had a strong interest in supporting youth baseball and was committed to providing quality playing facilities and supporting to youth baseball activities. For as long as anyone could remember, dating back to the late ‘60’s, Churchill baseball players had been limited in their ability to having quality practices or playing games at home due to inadequate drainage in the Spring when High School baseball is played. To address this problem, this group of individuals developed a comprehensive plan to completely replace the outfield (including removing existing grass, installing a French Drain Tile System, and redoing the irrigation system) on the Varsity field and made major adjustments to the Junior Varsity field including replacing the infield playing surface and improving the drainage. To assist in the process, Churchill Baseball, Inc. was formed and has received Tax Exempt status under section 501 (c) (3) of the IRS code. The next major undertaking of the group was to develop a plan and secure funding for the improvement of the baseball facilities at Churchill High School.

Original Directors of Churchill Baseball, Inc.

Larry Bradley Bev Coplin
Tim McDaniel David Bakke
Brad Harrison

Coaching and Involved School District Staff Included:

Erik Hoberg (Head Varsity Baseball Coach)
Tim Carmichael (Churchill Athletic Director)
Mitch Bousquet (Assistant Baseball Coach)
Dale Hartley (Assistant Baseball Coach)

With the plan, organization and volunteer commitment in place, we were successful in obtaining a $25,000 grant was received from the City of Eugene’s Neighborhood Matching Grant program. The 4j School District also committed to provide significant support for the project by upgrading the sprinkler system, repairing the backstop and other significant improvements and enhancements to the field. With a majority of the funding and improvements in place, the group was then able to generate over $25,000 in financial support through fund-raising efforts and support from parents and local businesses. Additionally, massive amount of volunteer hours (literally thousands) were provided by the Players, Coaches, Parents, Local Area Residents, Fans, Alumni and Local Businesses to complete the hard work to complete the field in time to “Play at Home” in the Spring of 2004.
